How the calculation works

The calculator follows one order from the price the customer pays down to the money left in your bank.

  1. Remove GST. Selling price ÷ (1 + GST rate) gives your revenue. The rest belongs to the government.
  2. Subtract marketplace fees. Commission is a percentage of the selling price. Fixed or closing fees and shipping are flat amounts. Add 18% GST on fees only if you cannot claim it back.
  3. Subtract your costs. Product cost, packaging and the ad spend each order has to carry.
  4. Subtract returns. Return rate × cost of one return spreads the pain of returns across every order.

What is left is your profit per order. The max ad spend figure tells you how much you could spend on ads per order before the product starts losing money.

Questions sellers ask

Why is GST taken out of my selling price?

The price a customer pays on Amazon, Flipkart or Meesho already includes GST. You collect that GST on behalf of the government, so it was never your money. A ₹999 sale at 18% GST is really ₹846.61 of revenue plus ₹152.39 of tax.

Should I include GST on marketplace fees?

Marketplaces charge 18% GST on their fees. If you are GST registered and claim input tax credit, you get that back, so leave the box ticked. If you are not registered or do not claim credit, untick it and the calculator adds 18% to the fees.

What about TCS and TDS?

Marketplaces deduct TCS under GST and TDS under income tax from your payouts. These are not costs. They are credited against your tax and you can claim them back, so the calculator leaves them out.

How do I work out ad spend per order?

Take your total ad spend for a period and divide it by all orders in that period, not just ad-attributed orders. This gives the true advertising cost each order has to carry.

Are the marketplace preset values accurate?

No. They are round example numbers to get you started. Fees depend on your category, price band, fulfilment method and weight. Replace them with the rates shown in your seller dashboard for an accurate answer.
